New York City residents should call 3 1 1 to obtain 'Beat the Heat' safety tips. New York City residents should call 3 1 1 to identify cooling center locations and obtain 'Beat the Heat' safety tips. A Heat Advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time. Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk. Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures. Use air conditioning to stay cool at home or go to a place that has air conditioning. If you don't have home air conditioning, continue to seek out cool spaces each day as long as it remains hot, and for a few days after if your home is still hot. Check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! In cases of heat stroke call 9 1 1.

Air Quality Alert issued July 15 at 3:10PM EDT by NWS Upton NY The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following counties: New York, Bronx, Kings, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam until midnight EDT Thursday night. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Fine Particulates. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. Marine Weather Statement issued July 15 at 6:14PM EDT by NWS Upton NY The areas affected include... Sandy Hook NJ to Fire Island Inlet NY out 20 nm... New York Harbor... At 612 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms capable of producing winds to around 30 knots. These thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Rockaway Inlet to near Raritan Bay, moving SE at 50 kt. Locations impacted include... Sandy Hook Bay, Sandy Hook, The Verrazano Narrows Bridge, Raritan Bay, Lower New York Harbor, and Rockaway Inlet. Mariners can expect gusty winds to around 30 knots, locally higher waves, and lightning strikes. Boaters should seek safe harbor immediately until these storms pass.

Flood Advisory issued July 15 at 5:32PM EDT until July 15 at 7:30PM EDT by NWS Upton NY * WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected. * WHERE...A portion of southeast New York, including the following counties, Kings (Brooklyn) and Richmond (Staten Island). * WHEN...Until 730 PM EDT. * IMPACTS...Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 532 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. Minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the advisory area. Up to 0.5 inches of rain have fallen. - Additional rainfall amounts up to 1 inch are expected over the area. This additional rain will result in minor flooding. - Some locations that will experience flooding include... Coney Island, Todt Hill, The Verrazano Narrows Bridge, Huguenot, Bay Ridge, Port Richmond, Oakwood, Tompkinsville, Sheepshead Bay, Annadale, New Dorp, Grasmere, Heartland Village and Greenridge. - http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads.
